I have a confession to make…I’m a gadget junkie! I’m a sucker for pretty much all gadgets (tech or otherwise)…especially tools in the kitchen that make life easier.
How many people will admit that they’ve cut themselves (or very nearly) doing something silly in the kitchen? Well, I have. Thankfully, I’ve never had a bad accident…but a lot of near misses where I had that “DUH why did I do that?!” afterthought.
I’m not sure if I saw it at a restaurant somewhere (table-side guac) or maybe on TV, but I used to do that thing where you flick the blade of the knife in the pit of an avocado and pull it out all in one smooth motion. That worked great for years until once I missed the pit while not paying attention and scared myself half to death.
Ever since then, I now tiptoe around the pit like it’s glass and feel like an idiot trying to delicately pry it out. Even more “duh”, I’ve accidentally sliced through the skin of an avocado and almost got my hand…you know, when half the avocado is cupped in your hand and you quickly make slices? It’s not like this is a regular occurrence for me; however, when you’re trying to multi-task while cooking (chasing two kids around, rushing to get dinner done, etc)…it happens to the best of us.
When I saw this nifty little tool, I HAD to have it. It’s advertised to peel and pit damn near anything (avocado, kiwi, papaya, baked potatoes, squash, melons, etc). I was skeptical it would pit it too, but it does indeed work!
It’s dishwasher safe and has no sharp edges – completely safe for cooks of all ages.
Today I tried it out for the first time. As you see in my little demo below, it couldn’t be easier to use. With a single avocado and hurrying to feed a hungry baby, I only had one shot. I didn’t read any instructions…you just pick it up slide. It got everything out very smoothly and cleanly, leaving nothing behind in the skin.
One thing I will mention is that it was easier to pit the avocado after I got the skin off first. For the pit, you want to go from the side of the pit so you have more room length-wise.
I bought mine on Amazon for $14.25 (free shipping):

One final note: I purchased the medium-sized Avoloop, and it actually has a plastic green handle (not wood like the picture). But I like that better since it is easier to disinfect.
